The 5 R's of Safeguarding are a simple framework used to guide anyone who has a safeguarding concern, particularly around children or vulnerable adults.
The 5 R's are often taught in schools, churches and charities to assist staff and volunteers to handle safeguarding situations responsibly.
The 5 R's help to ensure concerns are taken seriously, handled properly, and passed on to the right people.
Here's the breakdown:
1. Recognise
⚠️ Be alert to the signs of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
🛡️ Trust your instincts if something feels wrong.
2. Respond
✅ React calmly and appropriately to what you have seen, heard, or been told.
❗ Offer reassurance, but don’t make promises you can’t keep (e.g., confidentiality).
3. Report
🗣️ Communicate with the appropriate safeguarding lead/DSA or authority.
📋 Follow your organisation’s safeguarding policy and procedures.
4. Record
✍️ Make an accurate, timely, and factual record of what you have observed or been told.
❗ Avoid assumptions or personal opinions – stick to what was said/done.
5. Refer
🚨 If necessary please ensure the concern is passed to statutory services (e.g., social care, police) for intervention or assessment.
🚨 If anyone is at risk of significant harm: Contact Emergency Services on 999🚨
