The Privilege and the Burden

Working in safeguarding, people entrust us with their stories. Sometimes they come in whispers so soft and quiet they are barely audible. Sometimes stories spill out in fragments — disjointed, raw, unfinished. Others stay hidden behind long silences, waiting for the moment when words can finally emerge.
These stories are not just “disclosures” or “case notes.” They are human lives — layered with pain, resilience, courage, and longing to be believed. To sit with them, to listen , is one of the most profound responsibilities we can ever carry.
Holding these stories is both privilege and burden. Privilege, because we are invited into sacred ground — the places where people dare to name what was once hidden. Burden, because the weight of that truth is heavy, and it cannot be carried alone. Nor should we carry it alone.

Safeguarding is not simply about stopping harm. It is about bearing witness. It is about making sure that what was once silenced is not ignored again. It is about ensuring that every voice is honoured, even when broken, trembling or unsure.
To those who share their stories: we see you. To those who listen: may we do so gently, faithfully, and with integrity.
And to all of us: may we never forget that safeguarding is not just policy or procedure — it is the work of honouring human dignity, story by story.
If you are involved in safeguarding, remember: you are not meant to carry the burden alone. Seek support, share the load, and let’s keep working for cultures where truth is heard and dignity is restored.
